Measuring Basics
Hellerbass relies on two key measurements to make their bass strings:
A) The distance from the hitch pin to the front bridge pin
B) The distance from the hitch pin to the agraffe
The A & B measurements are critical for creating a set of strings with an even line of copper windings across the piano. They also help compensate for anomalies in scaling, ensuring you will get the best sounding bass strings possible!
The Hellerbass measuring tape is the easiest way to take these measurements - and it's FREE! If you don't have one and need to take measurements, follow the same protocol but measure in front of the hitch pin nearest the strings.

Measuring a Full Set
Hellerbass uses the A & B measurements you send to create an even line of copper across all the bass strings. The goal is to have a consistent length of core wire from the bridge pins to the beginning of the copper windings, and from the agraffes to the beginning of the copper windings. To order a full set of strings, download the scaling document and record your measurements. Then upload your document on the order form, and Hellerbass will get to work making your strings!
Measuring Single Strings
Installed Strings:
If you are replacing a string that is still in the piano, measure the distance from the hitch pin eye to the beginning of the copper winding, and from the hitch pin eye to the end of the copper winding. Note on the order form if the string is at tension or not!
Missing Strings:
If the string you are replacing has mysteriously disappeared, measure A & B lengths, the overall thickness (including the copper windings), and the steel core size of the two neighboring strings.
