Supportive structural beams in the back of upright pianos. There are typically 3-6 back posts on an upright piano. Part of the manufacturing process is to design a backpost structure that provides optimum support and tonal resonance, and each manufacturer tends to have different ideas of what an ideal backpost structure should be.
