Hammer shaping is an essential part of servicing pianos. Not only do worn hammers exacerbate the inharmonic sounds of the piano, they also cause uneven wear on the strings, which can lead to frequent string breakage in extreme cases. In general, the goal of hammer shaping is to restore the hammer back to its original shape - however, hammer shaping is tied to voicing, and there are some choices available regarding tone that will determine the actual desired shape of the hammer.
